These are good examples of how writing drawing and lettering at the same time affects the storytelling. As you’ll know from my earliest posts, one of my principal interests is the difference between how word and image create emotion. The kiss page conveys a particular feeling with a tone and immediacy that could never be precisely evoked through words. A verbal description of the same thing would always feel slightly different and be absorbed in a different way.
I liked this page, so knocked it up into a rough cover too.
The first page of Jay and Pippa in the clearing would have unfolded differently if I’d written a script describing the action before creating the page. The balance of image and word is very different when you create the comic in both forms simultaneously. Words are a limiting filter for images, and the interplay is much more fluid using this process.
